Historical collection

Collecting of historical content material began before the foundation of the Museum and it is the oldest department at the Museum. It follows the development of Prokuplje and Toplica from the Medieval period until today. Department stores material starting from the Ottoman period: deeds, photos, documents, money, weapons and more. The collection contains about 2000 items.

The period from 1878 to 1912

Acording to Resolutions of Berlin Congress, after liberation from Ottomans, Toplica was annexed to Serbia. In this period was built memorial fountain dedicated to the liberators of Prokuplje in the center of the town (renovated in 1993), the building of primary and secondary schools, 1899 (today Primary School ,,Tatko '') and County Authorities building which was built in 1911. The main meeting place was tavern „Evropa“ which was built in eighties of the XIX century. The famous military leader, Duke Zivojin Misic has been officiated in Prokuplje in 1880, and in 1912 he bought a house in Prokuplje from General Milojko Lesjanin's wife.

The period from 1912 to 1918

In the Balkan wars in 1912 and 1913, Prokuplje was a place of mobilization of the Second Infantry Regiment ,,Prince Mihailo“. Due to the extraordinary courage of the people in these wars Bulgarians was named the regiment - The Iron Regiment. In both Balkan wars there was killed and wounded 61% of officers, 70% of non-commissioned officers, 62% of soldiers from the ranks of the regiment.

In the First World War, Second Iron Regiment participated in the Battle of Cer, Drina and Kolubara. Commander of the regiment, Milivoje Stojanovic was killed in the battle of the Drina. In his honor Stevan Binicki composed ,,March on the Drina''.

In October 1915, part of Serbian army with King Petar retreats to Kosovo through Prokuplje and Toplica. Second Iron Regiment was distinguished in breach of the Thessaloniki front and in the liberation of Serbia. About the heroism of the Second Iron Regiment speaks the fact that there were 126 Karadjordje's star holders.

During World War II, in 1917 in the Toplica area erupted a revolution which was a revolt against the Bulgarian occupation and attempts of denationalization, internment, mobilization and their reprisals against the population of the occupied territory. The leaders of the revolution were Kosta Vojinovic and Kosta Milovanovic Pecanac.

In this period was built city hospital, by the intercession of Minister of Health, doctor Aleksa Savic whose foundation is at the top of the hill Hisar in the old town. Waterworks and high school were built in this period, too.

There are a lot of photographs and documents of a political, economic and cultural development of Prokuplje and Toplica.

Patriarch Varnava and King Alexandar Liberator were attended the consecration of the monument to the pepole of Toplica who were killed in wars during the 1912-1918. and the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of St. Prokopije's church.

Period since 1945

This period is documented by the material that follows the post-war reconstruction and construction of Prokuplje and Toplica, political, economic and cultural development until today, and it also includes the NATO aggression in 1999.

The Museum has photographs, personal items, weapons and documents from this period.

Uprising of Toplica collection

It contents historical materials related to the revolution in 1917 in the area of Toplica. The collection includes archives, Kosta Pecanac's diary, personal belongings of the participants of the revolution, photos, documents and weapons. The collection contains about 100 items.

Second World War collection

This collection ncludes historical material of Prokuplje and Toplica during the period of the Second World War. The collection includes archives, materials, weapons and personal items of Partizans and the Chetniks, photos and documents of internees and war prisoners.

The collection contains about 600 objects.

Народни Музеј Топлице

Народни музеј Топлице oснован је 1946. год. у старом здању и адаптираном простору зграде на Хисару (задужбина бившег министра здравља лекара Алексе Савића).
Музеј је 1962. године пресељен у зграду бивше поште у улици Ратка Павловића. Зграда је и данас споменик културе под заштитом државе.
